Responsibilities:

  • The Assessor’s office is primarily responsible for preparing the Town’s Grand List. The Grand List is generated each year as of October 1st and is a record of all taxable and tax exempt property including real estate, personal property and motor vehicles.
  • Property record cards are kept in the Assessor’s office and are available to the public during office hours.
  • Real Estate values are determined during a revaluation which, per State Statue must be done every 5 years.
  • Motor Vehicle values are obtained by using NADA average retail and the Older Car Price Guide (a drive able vehicle).
  • Personal Property consists primarily of business property and is priced new then depreciated on a schedule approved by O.P.M.

Important information:

Veterans:
DD214's have to be on file in the Town Clerks office before Oct. 1st to receive a $3,000 exemption on your property. The filing is one time only and will be applied every year after the initial filing.
Additional Veterans program:
This program is income qualifying and opens on Feb. 1st and closes on Oct. 1st. The Veteran must be over 65 or totally disabled to receive an additional exemption.
Homeowners tax relief:
Homeowners must be over 65 or totally disabled and have a qualifying income. The program opens on Feb. 1st and closes on May 15th. Please contact the Assessor’s office for current qualifying income limits.
Renters Rebate:
Renters who are over 65 or totally disabled and meet income guidelines may qualify for rent relief. The program opens on May 15th and closes on Sept. 15th. Please contact the Assessor’s office for current qualifying income limits and paperwork needed to file. 
Totally Disabled Exemption:
Proof of total disability under Social Security or under any Federal, State, or local Government, (to be determined by the Secretary of Policy & Management).
Active Military vehicle exemptions:
Connecticut residents who are active military are eligible to receive a tax exemption on one vehicle.

Out of state military based in Connecticut are entitled to all vehicles tax exempt.
